On the morning of March 14, 2022, in the Nevada desert, 46-year-old Michael “Mike” Roberts, known online as a devoted globe defender and mocker of Flat Earth theories, prepared for the biggest moment of his life.

Roberts had built a steam-powered rocket with the dream of soaring high enough to photograph Earth’s curvature and finally “end the Flat Earth nonsense.”

He told reporters at the launch site:

“Today we silence the conspiracy theorists. Today, science wins.”

The Impact No One Expected

At exactly 11:42 a.m., Roberts’ rocket ignited. Flames roared, dust clouds rose, and the machine clawed upward into the sky. Spectators held their breath.

For nearly two minutes, the flight looked promising. Then, at roughly 62 miles (the so-called Kármán line), disaster struck.

Ironically, in trying to prove the ball Earth, he instead became a symbol of the very truth he mocked.
